Would it make any sense to start off with just the frame? Say a 50 year model frame and pick up cab bed front clip are fenders as you go you come across them or can afford them. And if so how would you title it? Not my plan just wondering if anyone has tried this?

Every single piece of a 1/2 ton Advance Design Truck can be found in today’s aftermarket including the cab. It would be quite expensive to build one from entirely new parts. Drivetrain parts can be sourced and rebuilt to new condition. Just speculating, I bet it has been done but probably not by a member here. It would have to be titled as a “Shop Built” here in Oklahoma.

Well, if the cab has a SN on it, in CO one can get a title with Notarized bill of sale, and inspection, so it would be best to get it running before inspection.

The "nickels and dimes" of that project will turn into "hundreds and thousands" as you go. I just did a pre-purchase inspection of a 68 Dodge Charger that's going to a buyer in Australia. This one's a "numbers-matching" example of a 440 engine 4 speed car, and the purchase price of $90K is almost, but not quite a "break-even" situation for the seller. Remember, now, he started with a complete car, and simply restored it to showroom-new condition. I can't imagine what it would cost to build a stovebolt "One Piece At A Time"! If Johnny Cash was still alive maybe he could make a guess!

Age old saying and said a lot. Spend a little on the buy, spend a lot on the build. or Spend a lot on the buy, Spend a little on the build. You have to find the balance that you want and can afford. But yea just in a curios thought I took a catalog and started with a frame and just started adding all the list price parts from fully body metal to engine. when I hit 50k i stopped adding and the interior was not even on my list yet. sure you could piece it together with used, found, bought, stolen parts but how long is it going to take you to fine those parts unless like he said. your in a johnny cash mood.

That’s kinda what I was thinking. I am dealing with a guy now that has a project truck that wants a little more than I am willing to pay. But that’s fine I will find one to my liking. I have watched lots of videos and the price is never mentioned they just show up. Some let you know but not many. Thanks for your responses

I am constantly amazed at what a bunch of overaged children are willing to spend to indulge their passion for full sized Hot Wheels toys! I have done inspections for potential buyers of these things for over 15 years now, and the prices just keep inflating. Of course, I used to build engines for guys who liked to go around in circles on a quarter mile of hard-packed dirt. They spent outrageous sums of money. too, and I came to believe that it's morally wrong to let a fool keep any money in his pocket when he's willing to pay me to make his engine go a little faster! My kids ate a lot of good food and slept in a warm house, thanks in part to the old saying- - - -"Blesses are they who go around in circles, for they shall be called Big Wheels!"
