Isn't the vent door part of the Fresh Air Heater? If there wasn't one of those installed, there's nothing there but a cover plate screwed to the kick panel.

Isn’t there a vent on the drivers side of the early AD trucks?

Yes, but not on 51 and later. The only kick panel opening is on the right side on the later ones.
