I just got a Ram 2500 cummins Turbo deisel with a gooseneck hitch, and now I can finally go get my stovebolt from the farm in ft. stockton, but I need to rent a Trailer.

Are there any good places near Austin that I can get an appropriate trailer to haul the 44' 1.5 ton home with?

any other advice (aside from the FAQ) on pulling these sort of things home?

thanks in advance.

Advice? Bring a friend and have some fun. My bolt was 2 hours north. It was an adventure. In my haste to get to the car wash and blow off some grease and then home and finally get the trailer back, I never took 1 picture. Slow down and have some fun.

Are the wheels on the truck free? I seem to recall a person or two that has moved a big bolt behind a tow bar, no trailer involved.

Ask your local rental place....not U-haul...there are places out there that rent a lot of stuff besides U-haul or Ryder. These places serve industrial/construction places and don't do much with the general public on a routine basis....the good rental places should know who has a bigger trailer to meet your needs.

the wheels on the truck are free... but it's about 400 miles from Ft Stockton back to Round Rock... So I defenitely need a trailer.

I'll try to remeber to take pictures!

GL Perry is the one that talks about using a tow bar to drag trucks home from a distance.

I called a tow truck to drag my two big trucks home, but it was only 4 miles so that wasn't a big deal.

You might also look into a tow dolly. You loose the advantage of trailer brakes, but you also loose a few thousand pounds of load. You just need a dolly wide enough for the front wheels, and in a pinch the fronts can be used as spares it you need them. And you only need one tire on each side in the rear to move an empty truck.

I'm really concerned with the state of the bearings, the things been sitting longer than I have been alive, so I don't trust those to last the 400 mile trip... the tires are new, so they'll be fine.

Most of the trailer sellers/supply houses in the Houston area also rent trailers. Pull out the yellow pages and look under "trailers". Good luck.

Fahr try nations Rents as I think they have larger trailers for rent.

Have you tried the Hauling Board on the Yesterday's Tractors web site? That's a good place to try finding someone who might be headed in your direction with an empty trailer.

Worth a shot before you try renting a trailer.

On the other hand, I bought a G/N flat trailer to haul my 4400 around on (a 14,000-lb GVW trailer with a flip down beaver tail) for about $4k -- so far haven't hauled the 4400 but I've hauled a lot of other things and made some $$$ doing so -- from heavy equipment to vegetables smile G/N flat trailers are not that expensive and you'll be surprised how much work you can find to do with them.

Just a thought.

Funny Story to add: when my son and I went to get the 59 about 4 hrs away neither one of us had a truck at that time good enough to feel safe about the trip. So we borrowed Grandpa Corn's (Dad)new Ford and 2 wheel dolly.

We took pictures of buying and getting it. Also when we got home Jason sat in the cab of the 59 and I took a picture of the 2 trucks hooked up. Dad being his usual self was teasing us about how a Ford had to pull a Chevy. We said no Grandpa and showed him that the Chevy was actually pushing the Ford home. grin Got his goat and we loved it.

Wellll, it's home. still on the rental car hauler, and almost a ticket later, but we made it!

Packed up and left on saturday morning, drove the 400 or so miles with the empty trailer, no problem. except Dimitri (son) got sick on the way. by the time we got to Ft. Stockton, he was running a pretty good fever. this meant my wife was not going to be able to help me load the truck.
Part of what I was niavely trying to do was change the tires on it before I loaded it on the trailer, in the assumption that round tires roll better smile I ended up spending the rest of saturday trying to change one tire. and trying to get teh other front rim off.
the one rim I did get off, someone in there brilliance had used a split rim that had been cut, and welded back together, so it is just a bit smaller than it should, 3 pry bars later, I gave up. that tire was flat on two sides, so I cut the old tire off completely.
it is now 8am sunday, the truck hasn't moved and I am due back that evening at 8 to unload it with some freinds to help. so I start working smart AND hard. I set up my hand winch on the trailer to the front axle. I put the rim back on the hub, set a steel pipe under it, bolted down the other rim I had been trying to remove, jacked up the back and sput the tires so the flat spot was not down on both at the same time, and began to load the trailer with the truck. the hand winch had 4 ft. of cable, so i winch the truck about 3 ft up the trailer, starp and chuck, reset the winch further up the trailer, winch, set, move, repeat....

4 hours later, the truck is on the bed. strapped down and ready to ride. it is now about 2:30 on sunday, I had meant to leave at noon... and we still needed to eat and load the rest of the parts... by 4:30 we were finally on the road home.. problem was the ball hitch trailer I had to rent was not too stable in the wind (it was gusting to 25 and 30 just east of Ft.Stockton) so I was limited to about 60 miles an hour, and the hills slowed me down even more. so the normaly, 5 and a half hour drive stretched into 7 hours.
In fredricksburg I got pulled over, it turns out that the marker bulb on the trailer burned or shorted out, got a warning (think that the load I was hauling had a hand in that) and had to drive the rest of the way with the flashers on.

got home at 11:30, determined I was too tired to even try and figure out how to get the truck back off the trailer. so it will wait till this afternoon.

Pictures of the loaded truck forhtcoming, and probably some of the un-loading... none of the loading as I was alone for that part.

-Mike R. smile grin I finally have it home!!!

Congrats Mike!!! Good to hear that those West Texas winds didn't get ya. Growing up in Midland and now living in Amarillo, I have seen many loads lost due to the wind.

Mike, somehow I missed this thread until now.

If I had known you were going to Ft. Stockton, I would have don't my level best to plan to go along--maybe drive myself.

Didn't you say you had TWO trucks cornered?

So where in Austin are you, anyway? You can't hide an old truck like yours forever, you know.

A little warning and I can maybe come be to help you once in a while--tear stuff down, put stuff back on, you know, get in the way.

thanks,

nah, just this one for now... it should be enought o keep me busy... but I have lots of parts still out at Ft Stockton from other trucks...

It is off the trailer, and only a little damage to the trailer wink I had a flat while trying to get the thing lined up with my driveway... and in the process of changing the tire (thank goodness for 15 ton floor jacks!) I bent the cheapy trailer stand by the ball hitch... teach me to rent a cheap trailer... anyway.. Gus is now proudly sitting in my driveway here in roud rock texas. IH35 South to Sam Bass rd. right on meadows... (first street after train tracks) it's in the driveway, so hard to miss!

first thing to do when I get home tonight is to get the rim off and to a tire shop to get a tire on the front left... it didn't survive the loading/unloading.

I haven't been past your place yet, but I will. Got to head down to the airport tomorrow--Irma's mom is coming to visit.
