Splitting the air flow through two carbs will reduce the vacuum you can develop by closing only one choke plate. Normally, closing the choke allows the manifold vacuum created by cranking to pull gas through all the passages in the carburetor. If choking only one carb allows a cold engine to start, that carb is jetted WAAAYYYYY too rich. Jerry

Agree with Jerry on the too rich if a cold engine will start on just one when the weather is cold.
Plus, the choke butterfly IMPROVES low engine RPM performance, as it acts as a straightening vane to improve air velocity into the carburetor.
Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot airThe most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify. You want chokes on both carbs. Makes life a little easier starting on a cold day.

Thank you, Jon Thank you, Mike
That has been my experience with the 1960 261 on my 1954 Suburban, when I had two-216 versus two-235 carbs.
However, that old 261 now has a 2-barrel AA1 Holley Carburetor with adjustable jets. It (the carb) can be easily adjusted to idle nicely at very low RPM.
And, that 261 3106 can now easily/smoothly accelerate from standing-still to illegal speeds very nicely/impressively/quickly. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 295 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 295 | Thanks for reply’s I could add a second choke where the throttle cable is. As an old stovebolter (DENNIS) would say it’s just being grumpy. Thanks Robert

Propane is very "dry" and (unlike petroleum-based fuels, but like ethanol & methanol) provides no lubrication to the seats. Well there still running . These trucks use the most common exhaust valve on earth,I use the valves with the hard button, what used to be sealed power 1003x. Goodsons sent me to another outfit for seats and they were reasonable . Nice to get your seats back up where you can get spring tension again. I dont think those seats are going to be bothered by propane. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2018 Posts: 2,450 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2018 Posts: 2,450 | panic propane isn't dry it just doesn't wash oil away lke gasoline does, that is why your cylinders and rings last so much better.now as for exhaust valves they microscopically weld to the seat and erode it away because of no carbon to pad them. Seats are an easy fix, needed with no-lead too ! heads with induction hardened seats will work, but once ground are susceptible too ! most of the 235 heads I see have the guides knurled, and seats are deep , new guides, hard seats and hard button valves will give these heads a new life. I give them a 3 angle seat with about a .060 seat width ground at 46 degrees with a 45 degree valve. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2018 Posts: 2,450 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2018 Posts: 2,450 | panic Just replied to you==poof its gone??? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,803 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,803 | There's too many machining mistakes in that post to address individually! James Wan could win an oscar for a movie about propane conversions! One might also consider: Energy: 87 octane regular 116,700 BTU/gallon 87 octane E10 111,730 BTU/gallon propane 91,500 BTU/gallon Octane (AKI): 87 octane regular - 87 AKI propane 104.5 AKI And what is the compression ratio of a stovebolt??? Also, costs: Missouri has a propane vehicle license fee, in addition to the normal vehicle license fee, for vehicles using propane for propulsion. Check your own state laws. Jon. If I never see one of those rigs again, it will be about three days too soon! They're a royal PITA to work on, and underpowered to boot! Jerry PS: What does Manuel charge to operate the choke plates while he's dueling with the carbs?????????
