I have gotten my used engine running on the test stand It`s a 1951 235 from a car w/powerglide-Hydraulic lifters. It seems to run pretty smooth. I did a compression test #1-- 125 #2-- 130 #3 -- 128 #4 --125 #5 --130 #6 --138 I built the gauge tool for a leak down test and on every cylinder when I apply 100 psi at Top Dead Center The air forces the piston downward and moves the engine forward. All spark plugs are out and I have been watching the valves to get TDC. Am I missing something ? From reading old threads I was expecting to see a drop in pressure not it holding and forcing the piston down. Any input appreciated.
Clamp a pair of vise grips on the flywheel ring gear on both sides of the bottom opening in the bellhousing. It's a lot simpler than trying to find the exact TDC spot where air pressure won't turn the crankshaft. With the engine in the vehicle, just put the transmission in gear and chock the wheels or set the parking brake, or both. The test will work just as well with the piston at bottom dead center with both valves closed as it will at the top, BTW, so you could just loosen up the valve adjustments and do it that way.
With compression readings that good, a leakdown test is a waste of time. Jerry
