The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts Picked up the Two Ton.

Saturday, I made the run up to Brookfield to check out the big truck I found last weekend, and after some negotiation and some trading it's all mine.

I drove it the approximate 5 miles from the previous owners house to our farm. It was great, cool to drive something that big, gotta say the first thing I'm doing is putting on some bigger mirrors.
Had a little trouble on the way, it was running really hot but I think that the PO has the timing advanced too far, and the return spring on the starter was broke and now the starter sounds like the teeth are gone (I think it chewed them off on the way maybe) But I have the starter off the 216 that was in my 1/2 53. Did the big trucks have the same number of teeth on the flywheel that the 1/2 tons did?
Turns out the 2 speed rear is activated via a vacume? switch on the dash?
It would not dump when I got there (I'm thinking low fluid but didn't check it yet) Also it's missing one of the cables, the PO said it would be the one to let the dumpdown. Anyone have an extra cable laying around or know where i can get one? Here\'s what the one's that's there looks like.

Also something kinda cool I didn't expect the truck to have was this switch I'm guessing it's a lockout like you would use on a drag car to help do burnouts.

ok--lessee if i can remember them all.
napa sells replacemet cables, including fancy knobs in different colors.

that ain't a line lock, but works close to the same. it's a mico lock. sorta like a parking brake. ya mash down on the brake, and engage the lock. it keeps the brakes locked while letting the brake lights go out. good for TEMPORARY parking, or holding the truck in place. they will, in time, bleed off.

the starter. well--better yank it and see if there's any teeth left on the flywheel. pretty good sized UHH-OH! yaknow, you can buy a replacement bendix for the starter. ya did know that, right? cheap fix!

yeah ya shift the 2 speed with the knob on the dash.

timing advanced too much can cause the overheat, but i sure would be looking to see if there is water circulating in the radiator.

congrats on the new hauler. it looks pretty decent, and if sha'a a runner, then ya got a workhorse.

One cable is for the PTO and the other one goes to the pump to make it go up and down.

mongo looks like a good find, the bigger the better. hope you injoy working on it. still trying to put mine on the list of things to do, how long of a bed do you have on it? take your time doing it you well injoy it more. mike j

Thanks for the info. Checked out the radiator and it was full when I started. When it warms up I'll prob drain it and flush out the system to see how it looks. The original color on the truck was green and later was painted (with a brush I think) red the green is starting to show through in many places but not really any bare metal yet. At some point I plan on repainting it and will prob. go back to green.

Got a buddy that bought half a big truck last summer, that the PO had cut the frame under the cab and made the box on the back a trailer. It has several big truck pieces I'm gonna get including the front fenders and the PTO control cables and whatever parts he doesn't want. He bought it for the near perfect cab to use on another 1/2 ton project.

The guy I bought it from said it was a 14 foot bed on it, I haven't bothered measuring it yet.
Any body know what length roll back car haulers beds usually are?
