My 49 6400 grain bed truck has ahydraulic lift to dump the bed. It is run from a PTO off the side of the transmission. It functions well, but there is a slight leak from the pump and seems to be coming from the drive shafts on the front of the pump. Does anyone have any info on these units or know where to obtain data. Also, is the fluid fill for these units located on the big lift cylinder? There is an oval plate on the cylinder held on with two bolts that appears to be the only place large enough to add fluid. I can see fluid in the cylinder. Thanks in advance for any info.

Any Manufacturer ID? Some are long gone now. Garwood was a popular brand. Best you can do is take off pump, disassemble, and see if seals have a number on them or take old one or measurements to a bearing place, and see if they have or can get one or two. OR, live with the leak, most old units leak some, and forget it!
If you have the big single cylinder, it is also the resivoir for oil. Usually a pipe plug on top, fill to it's parked level till it runs out. Maybe the cover you mention is correct, not sure. There has to be some air space left in the higher end of unit, it won't be completely full.

There is a Mfg tag rivited to the lift bed that states the Manufacturer is Hercules Steel Product Corp of Galion, Ohio, USA. It gives the Hoist Model as JDX, with a serial number of 96768. The pump itself has two sets of numbers on it, #7870 and #12560. There is no other info on the pump itself that I can see. The cylinder of the lift/hoist is about 30 inches long and has a diameter of about 9.5 inches, so as you said the opening on the cylinder is more than likely the fill. Thanks again for the reply.
