1950 chev, 216 with 3 spd manual, enclosed tube and diff
Whenever shifting down from 3rd to 2nd, no matter how much i try to ease the gears in, they always give a little graunch, is this a common thing or is it possibly a sign my box is not the best

I'm only speaking for my 1950 3100 3 speed. Mine does it every time. Sometimes just a little but it's always done it. New fluid, level checked, ect.

The modern synthetic lubes are too slippery- - - -the brass synchronizer blocker ring can't get enough traction on the 2nd. gear to slow down the counter gear and prevent clashing. Drain the transmission, flush it by filling with a a solvent such as Mineral Spirits or Diesel fuel and idling the engine with the transmission in neutral, drain and refill with 90 weight mineral oil- - - -not multi-grade synthetic lube. If the gears still clash, you've got a worn out synchronizer.
