While looking to replace the damaged oil pump screen for my 1937 216 engine, I come up with GM 838803... Now 838803 looks nothing like what was there originally... Any idea of what is the replacement # for the original style screen or if 838803 will work without a problem?

Anything that is capable of straining out the "rocks, marbles and bowling balls" that are capable of damaging the oil pump should work OK, as long as the pickup tube for the oil pump remains at the right level to suck up oil that's even with the "add oil" mark on the dipstick. I have fabricated many pump pickup screens from the leaf filter mesh that fits over household gutters, and run them on high-revving round track race engines. That "bowling balls" quote is from a Carter Carburetor training manual from the late 1940's, describing the strainer screen on a fuel tank pickup tube, BTW!

I have ordered GM 838803 which appears to be the correct one...Photo taken from original 39 truck engine that I believe had never been apart. The other screen may not be OEM.

Philippe,
Your picture of screen on the left is what is pictured in my 1938 Chevy parts book so I would say that is original equipment for 37-38.
In 1939 GM 's replacement screen was 838803 for all gear type pumps 1929-39 .

Hello there,

Good to know that the replacement # will work, however I could not find a reference # for the 1938 model year...
