I would like to just replace it with a 12volt motor. Are there any suppliers that offer replacement motors? If I can't find a 12v motor would a voltage dropping resistor be a good permanent option?

If the battery and charging system is still 6V, a 12V motor will run very slowly, if at all. A 6V motor will run on 12V with a dropping resistor, but mount the resistor somewhere inside a duct or other area exposed to air flow, as it will develop a considerable amount of heat.

Different switch positions put one or more of the resistors in series with the motor, resulting in different blower speeds. You've got a 12V motor but it only runs at full speed in the "high fan" position. If it's like most of the GM blower motors of that vintage, there's a relay that bypasses the resistors for high fan operation.
