Guys,
I thought the G-10 represented Chevy vans, but I have seen several trucks for sale that claim to be G-10's. Why is this?

Be forewarned, jt - discussion of that G10 might be moved out of the "truck" forums.

"Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans" is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1995 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier".

Discussions of the Corvair Vans (Chevrolet small trucks) and Chevrolet Panel Wagons (Chevrolet small trucks) were banned/removed from the Stovebolt.com truck forums (they were not allowed in Panels 'N Burbs).

This post/thread might get moved to the Greasy Spoon.

G-10s are vans, we all know that. Heck I even owned a ‘69 G-10 that we made into a camper van in 1974. Why someone would call a truck a G-10 is just ignorance on the part of the seller or a typographical error when composing the ad.

Did I miss something along the way??? Why can't the pre-1973 "G" Series be talked about in the "truck" forums?

I too would like to know, they are built on truck chassis and rated as 1/2, 3/4 and one ton trucks.
Heavier step vans are allowed.

The El Camino is just a car with a bed though, so I get that.

Okay, fine. You want a ruling? Here's your ruling:

Vans = good

As long as they are GM-badged and built before 1988, they are cool in any forum (depending on subject matter, of course).


Anyone who bad mouths a van has never owned one.

Let it be known, I'm not trying to revive any discussion about G10's other than why someone would list their truck as a G-10. I didn't know if it meant they had put a van motor in their truck or whether they were just confused about the whole name designation

I think they were uninformed about the different markings. G And C letters are pretty much alike. Even sound the same somewhat.

On a side note JT, your question did get a ruling from John and I think it was the right decision.

The heavier Step Vans were sold as a Cab/Chassis with a firewall and steering/suspension components. Then shipped to the various body builders for completion to the buyers specs. The G series vans were for the most part completed by GM and sent to the GM Truck dealers for sale.

In the early 1970s, my dad bought a retired telephone company G10 van. He converted it to a camper. Yes, it had a 6 cyl engine.

My first paid truck driving job was working for a beer distributor as a summer job in the early '80's. The first vehicle they turned me loose on was a GM-powered Grumman Kurbmaster Step Van ("Locals" -- deliveries of small lots in the Augusta, ME area). Man, that thing was fun to drive -- especially with the doors open.

Since we're clearing things up around here, when did you move the acceptable year marker to 1988...the HOME page still says Pre-1973

In the late 1960's early 70's Chevrolet made the G-Series Sportvan (windowed passenger van), Chevy-Van (cargo van) and small FWD Control vans (which look like the mid-60's vans with the engine along side the drivers seat). The larger Step Van's (bread trucks) were built on the P-Series platform with steel or aluminum bodies or sold as a Chassis only for use as a motor home or custom bus.

Mike ... Just stood up the new additions last week and am still in process of tracking down all the fugitive year markers and zapping them.

According to Wikipedia, last year for the G-Series was '96. I had an '88. I loved that van (purchased USG Surplus for $450. Slapped a battery and four new tires to it and drove it for about 5 years. Sold it to a garage band in Fredericksburg).
