So I'm in the final stages of assembly with the driveline on my 49 3/4 ton. I've been looking at the output shaft u joints on the transmission and wondering how they get lubricated. Do they just catch some gear oil splash from off the speedo gears? Should i be pulling apart the assembly to grease them while i have the torque tube off? I never pulled them apart when i rebuilt the transmission because they felt very smooth, and also because i had a hard time finding a replacement online.

Had a hard time finding much for info on this joint in both the manual and online. Thoughts?
Thanks

A 3/4 ton is an open drive line right?
All my trucks have a grease nipple on each cross, a couple pumps and it squeezes out each cup.

It's enclosed up until the steady bushing. The u joint in question is covered by the torque tube and the transmission housing. No grease nipples

On my half ton model gmc 9300 with sm 420 the back housing at the back of the transmission has a small plug to fill gear oil in the bell for lubrication for the u joint .the service manual should tell you how much to put in .

Lubrication of the enclosed u-joint with an SM420 transmission.
The lubricant addition hole is on the upper right side of the SM420 transmission.

transmission lubricant additions
- up to the hole, if lubricant oil is not warm
- 1/2" below the hole if the lubricant oil is not warm

To speed things up in filling a empty "cold" SM420 transmission, I take out the gear lever and fill through the top until the lubricant comes out that hole on the upper right side. (put a drip tray under the transmission to catch the "overfill")
