Hello All,

Looking for guidance on which surfaces of an interior 53 truck receives the interior paint color. I know — headliner area back window area and seat frame receive it. What about the door seal and door frame?

Any pictures would help. Searching the old inter-web gives me a mixed bag of results. Looking for expert advice from the experts themselves.

Thanks for the help.

Dad and son

The change from interior color to exterior color happens at the edge of the door, just inside the skin wrap (or under the weatherstrip).

The door opening parting line in close to where the exterior sheet metal is folded over onto the hinge pillar, lock pillar, and the roof. The rocker panel under the door opening is interior color. I have seen a very original truck in original paint and it appears that the factory used masking tape and did not place it exactly on the junction of the sheet metal and the pillars.

Nice Job. thumbs_up I was surprised a bit by the color, but I assume you researched the correct color for a '53. I know it's different than earlier ADs.

I would sure like to get to that point on my project. I'm just at primer and have no access for painting till spring.

1953 regular cab interior color: Sheen Gray Metallic (DUPONT) or Sheen Gray Poly (PPG)

PPG 3110413 - Now PPG 27467
DUPONT 202-81407

Some 1953 cabs might have been painted with the 47-52 interior color (but I cannot find a code)
some 1951/52 interior color names (no paint chips, unfortunately

here are some 1953 paint codes/names

Tim, I've seen samples of the 47-52 interior color, but was surprised by the olive green appearance of DadandSon's photo. I know that photos and computer screens don't give a good representation of actual color, but it looked pretty dark.
Here's a photo of the seat frame on my '51 and one of the 47-52 interior colors I found on the web (I think on TCPGlobal.com)

Hello, Kevin,

All I know is based on paint charts and paint chips.
I have never seen interior paint chips for your year.

Sorry,
Tim

The color I have Is grey brown enamel “PT107e” officially called champagne.

Chevrolet Chevy GMC Truck Interior Grey Brown Enamel Paint Quart 1947-1955

Matched the color from the interior before we sand blasted and confirmed with the seat rails. I like grey but this will pop with the original transport blue.

Thanks again for the help. I am spraying rest of the color this weekend the sitting the cab on the finished chassis next weekend good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise!

That pic of the door jamb with your sprayout of the exterior color does look good. Not as dark looking as your first pic of the interior color.

Sorry I can't help on your paint quantity. I'm going with single stage. I bought 1 gallon and 1 quart of the exterior color. Keeping my fingers crossed that that's enough.

Nice!

Did you build a paint booth in your shop out of the plastic?

yes, created a positive pressure booth... two box fans with filters pushing are into the booth and one box fan with filter (porous) through the side window... I used the ZipWall system to provide a zipper door wide enough to roll the cab through on my dolly.

Material list.

1 roll of 6mil 10' x 100' clear plastic (for walls and floor)
1 roll of 2" wide duct tape
3 20"x20" Lasko Box Fans
2 20"x20" Filtrete Filters for intake air
1 24" x 24" Rheem Airfilter
2 "J" hooks to hang the fans up
Sheet metal screws to bolt fans together
Staples to fix plastic to ceiling.
Spare straight lumber to hold down plastic on the bottom just for weight.

Worked well... cross flow was good. Swept floor with sweeping compound and then used a garden sprayer with water to just lay moisture on the floor. Just a few specks I found that probably came off me more than the air.

Hope this helps.

Version 2.0

ZipWall 10' poles in each corner
15' 1x2 boards to seal plastic to ceiling
Magnetic strips on the plastic and filters to allow for easier change

I mark the corners directional for my garage orientation and use the ZipWwall poles in each corner along with a 1x2 along the plastic edge to create a tighter seal and ability to setup and take down easier.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately my garage isn't big enough to do that in, but someone else may benefit from your description. thumbs_up

I just noticed this discussion, so I’m late to the game. I was planning on painting outside, but now I might just build an enclosure like that!
I will be painting my ’47 Panel Truck interior. I notice there are two interior colors currently. There is what might be Graphite Brown Metallic on the dash, doors, most of the door frames, vent panels. There is also a Gray that is on the interior door frames, Interior roof above the windows, the seat riser, and the walls in the back. What color for the floor and interior firewall? What color for the strip across the front of the bed? What color for the strip across the rear of the bed, and the floor inside the rear doors? I understand the bed rails are Black.
I have read about the Graphite Brown Metallic for ’47-52, a modern substitite that looks close is RustOleum Dark Bronze Metallic #7272. I see it listed as the Medium, or Dark Tan Metalli-Chrome for ’47-’52, Sheen Gray Metallic for 1953 in the Tech Tips chart, and have heard it called Champaign or Grey Brown Enamel PT107e here. May be different for each set of years, different names, different paint formulas, different colors?
My truck is in good shape, I went and looked yesterday. I can see this interior color was applied before the exterior color evident by some overspray. The interior color on the door frames extends to include part of the exterior sheet metal. The exterior color ends just after the inward curve of the sheetmetal. The window trim is in a box and I didn’t look at that.
The Gray is listed as Pearl Beige in the Tech Tip for ’54. Is there a modern equivalent of the Gray? I do have plenty of original Gray that I might have it matched.

Interesting that the Tech Tip has interior colors for pickups for '47, but it says "except suburban and panel", but there are no colors listed for suburban or panel for that year.
Maybe one of the panel or suburban guys can fill in the blanks for you. If you have original pieces that aren't faded, you could get them color matched.

Here is some information on USA Chevrolet interior/exterior paint names/codes.

I am no expert but I have been collecting paint lists/charts/sheets for several decades.
