Self drilling/tapping screws do work well on mild steel.

If a regular combination drill and tap device is used with a radial drill press or a Bridgeport mill with the power feed set to advance the tap at the pitch of the thread, through thin material in a production situation where dozens of holes need to be drilled and tapped, they work. I don't think I'd use the ones pictured if someone gave them to me, let alone buy them.

Easy to break if you're not careful. As usual, lots of oil, advance slowly. My opinion is that a high quality drill set and very high quality taps cannot be beat. Gimmicks come and go but high quality bits, taps and dies will stay with you for your life. Lubricate and go slow is my method and 90 degree set angle will be assured. Doc.
