| | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 595 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 595 | guys! lets say you have 2 87' s10's one 2wd,one 4x4.we know that the frames are different from the doors foward. are the frames the same doors back? i know the rearends are different widths but are the frame rails the same.reason i ask is a 52' ad 3100 has 117" wb. so to match that you need a std cad long box s-10 and most s-10's were short box's which the wheelbase is to short. can a guy use the 2wd front frame section with 4x4 rear frame section stretched to correct wheelbase also giving you the correct rear end (4x4) as the 2wd rear is too narrow for AD trucks. I don't see why you couldn't splice tham together to make the length you need. Do be advised, though, that if the 4x4 truck is a ZR2, the ride hight is much higher due to the factory lift. Swapping in the 2wd springs is advisable.

The actual reason for the wider rear is because of the way the front is made. In order to use the ifs, it has to be wider than the std 2wd front because of the drive axles. If they were to be shorter to narrow up the front, there would be binding in the cv joints from the limited range of motion. That's also the reason tha front drivers have the wheels offset like they do. The wider rear on the S10 (and the '88-up fullsize) is to compensate for the extra offst required in the front. Std offset wheels will be fine on that axle for what you're doing with it, though.
