hey gang i have 61 apache stock rear .dont know much of these types. im going to open it and inspect it it may be 3.90 that would be great. i almost sure its a one legger. how to make posi? is there a chunk? a kit to make it a posi? dont want spools. change carrier or modify chunk want to keep the rest thanks!

Hy chaz71, if we are discussing 1/2 ton here, then I believe "Positraction" was an option. You would have to find and install a "Positraction" differential case and swap your ring gear onto it, the differential case may or may not be two pieces. While doing the upgrade check all your bearings and replace all seals. Setting up used gears for backlash can be tricky if you have never done it, take it to an established rear axle shop and have them set it up with the new pieces.

I had a '72 1/2 ton 4x4 that had a positraction in it. IIRC it was 3.07 ratio. I had to work on the rear end a couple times replacing clutch discs, and it was a one-piece differential housing.
So that might be an option for your search. The ideal thing would be to swap out the whole axle if you can find a suitable one, as opposed to messing around with yours.

thanks guys it is a half i dont know what year axles would fit in stock location? i found some stampings like m a 518

There should be stamped numbers on the ring gear that will tell you the gear ratio for sure.

You might contact Yukon Gear & Axle. They may be able to definitively ID your axle and help find a Posi for it.
