I'm looking at a 235 that appears to be from a '54. There's a series of numbers just in front of the no. 3 plug. Can anyone tell me what these numbers are?

Those casting numbers on the block are the last three digits from all of the different heads that fit that block.

Mike, I have never heard or read that before. Where did you get that information? I'd like to know more. The picture JoeR posted is of a head, and I have never understood what those markings mean.

Joe, those numbers from the passenger side of the head don't reliably decode the head casting, let alone the engine. What Tim was trying to politely point you to is the casting numbers that will ID head and engine block original usage. The head casting number is on the driver's side of the head, just above the second exhaust port. What's the 7-digit number there?

To ID the block, either the engine serial number that is stamped on the machined pad just aft of the distributor, and sort-of behind the dipstick (if it's still there), or the casting number, low and in front of the distributor, will ID the block (casting number can be hard to see if the engine is still in a vehicle, view blocked by the fuel pump and/or motor mount). Can you see either of those numbers on the engine block?
