I have a 1953 GMC and before I put in a sound deadening mat should I cover the small holes in the firewall to the engine compartment or does it make a big difference?

I have left the holes as they are, and, I have put plugs in the holes. A hardware store might have an assortment of plugs.

Maybe even in gray/grey, black, chomed, stainless-steel?

Some of those holes were used for the clips which hold in the internal firewall insulation pad. When I did this, I reused that pad and simply applied it over the top of the sound deadening stuff. Those holes that weren't needed I covered with plugs just like Tim did. I got them at TruValue hardware store in their Hillman parts section and think I may have paid $4 for all of them. The ones I got were black plastic.

The unused holes were originally covered from the inside by a sound deadening mat which was glued on. You can do the same thing with your sound deadening mat.
