Today, I thought I would button up aGMC 270. Installing .060 rings into pistons, and broke the bottom ring on a piston.

Oops!

So, I am not an expert at sizing rings, and I don’t want to buy a complete piston ring set for one broken ring.

Need your ideas? A standard 270 is 3.78125” diameter.

Is my math correct? .060 + 3.78125 =. 3.84125. Is there an engine with that bore size?

Would there be a source that sells a piston ring set for one piston or am I doomed for failure for the rest of my life, asking for forgiveness in the darkest of bars where men talk about these things and never let these things go, destined to lay out big bucks for one piston ring?

Thought? Assistance, advice?

My specs for a GMC 270 bore for .060 over is 3.836-3.838. Call Craig at Grant Rings. He was able to put together a set of standard rings for a 228 that I am building for my employer, and he may be able to help you out. 1-714-996-0050.

Call the manufacturer of the rings that you broke, they should be able to help with. I had Total-Seal rings help me out once, they were more then willing to make it right even though it was my fault.

Thought I would post a follow-up to this post. Thanks to "gmc-is-me" I worked with Grant Rings and Craig Marder there who spent time with me on the phone and through emails and helped me size a correct ring for this 270. Craig was a big help and walked me through the three measurements he needed.

To put this in context, this effort was for just one ring - to the tune of $11.45 including shipping. I told him I would purchase a complete set for a 270 with one additional oil ring to help make it a little more cost effective for Grant. When we finished - he billed me for one ring - and sent the request to their shop who made me a perfect fit oil ring set.

This was not a money maker for Grant Rings - and I don't know how often they receive work for these old engines; but I suspect that this special order required his patience...that he graciously assisted with to help me get on my way (or, out of his way... LOL).

Just FYI. More than pleased with the service, the connection, the good work and the help.
