Several months ago I posted about gross combined weight ratings on the 60-66 big bolts. I just ended up purchasing a 1966 C60 but I may have opened a can of worms! The VIN plate on the cab does not match the registration that has followed the truck for many many years (knew this before buying). I assumed the registration was wrong, but now I am thinking the opposite. The registration VIN is a C65 while the cab is C63. The truck has a 175 inch wheel base (102 CA) which matches a C65 not a C63 based on the 1962 manual a kind member on here shared with me. The serial tag on the drivers side kick plate appears to be correct because it specifies the 175 WB, as well as the Spicer 5 speed which is what is in the truck (based on the shift pattern). The glove box sticker is gone, and the body plate on the firewall is too Is there a serial number on the frame somewhere? I see on the C10-30s the number is on the LH side near the motor mounts but I can't find a number there. Any know another way I can confirm the identity of this truck??? | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 1,363 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 1,363 | ''62 wheel base may not be the same as '63, 1960 - 1962 used torsion bar front suspension While '63 went back to straight axle.

Did you check the top of the frame, drivers side above the front axle? It may take a wire brush to clean off the dirt and grime to see it... The serial number format changed between 1965 and 1966...'65 has the year "5" as the first number in the serial number sequence and '66 has the year "6" as the 5th or 6th digit in the middle of the serial number sequence just before the letter for the assembly plant. I did clean that area of the frame rail, but I will check again. I think the cab was swapped out at some point unfortunately as you guessed. Interestingly, when they did the cab swap (I think this was a LONG time ago) they swapped the drivers side kick plate, but didn't touch the VIN tag on the door jamb. I had the DMV inspection officer come out and take a look and he couldn't find other numbers. Since we have no other identification to go on, it will be getting a bonded title for the cab VIN.
I do have the old registration (and title) for the original VIN, which I will hang on to just to have. I could just do what has been done for many years with this truck and register/title it with the original VIN but that really wouldn't be the right way. My only concern is the GVWR, according to the '66 owners guide I bought not all C60H trucks had a 24k rating.
What's interesting is that both VINs are '66 C60H trucks. HC6536B116228 and HC6336B120924. The only difference I can tell is the wheelbase.
I am reaching out to the GM heritage VIN center to see if they can give me RPO codes and GVWR for both numbers. I am not holding my breath.
UPDATE: GM Heritage said their build records and invoices only go back to 1977. That is a bummer. How do guys with 60s muscle cars get RPO info if the vehicle is missing the sticker?

It was on the top of the frame rail as we thought, almost right behind the steering shaft, near where the frame curls and bends down towards the steering gear.
It matched the numbers on the registration that followed the truck which makes sense. So the cab was definitely swapped at some point.
I will be beginning the titling process in the next few days. I appreciate everyone's help, I plan to start a new thread about the truck in general so I can share some pictures and ask some more questions! | | | | Joined: Feb 2020 Posts: 26 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2020 Posts: 26 | Another NC boy here, can you take a pic of the vin location and also could you document the retitling process for NC? I've heard it's a pain depending on how nice the inspector/trooper is.

I would be happy to document the process once I have finished all the steps and paperwork done, which hopefully should be by the end of this week. Fortunately I got a pretty friendly inspector that educated me on the process so that everything would be correct, at least in the governments' eyes. | | |
