I am refurbishing my 1948 speedometer. There is a high beam indicator light socket. When I tore into it, I found what looked like a black disk with a hole in the center in that socket. It crumbled when I touched it. I put a piece of it on a light bulb and saw that it is an opaque dark red. I would like to replace it. I can't find one, does anyone know where I can get a replacement? I remember stage lights used gells, some kind of colored opaque sheets to create colored spotlights. Something like that might work. It has to be able to survive the heat of the indicator bulb. I did find a High beam dash lens set for '55-'56 car. Does anyone know if that is the same size as the 1948 truck speedometer?
So, I took a Folgers red coffee bucket and cut out a little disc. Interference fit it in to the space. Been working since 2012. Could it be a little darker? Sure. But it's red!!
I like that solution, but I don't have a Folgers tub. I did find a fresh-up kit for 41-46 that looks like it should work. Includes the gasket and grommets. My gasket is o.k. but the grommets are deteriorating.
I used clear plastic off on something random laying around and hit it generously with a red Magic marker. Make sure you use the correct bulb. it is substantially smaller (colder burning) than the rest of the dash bulbs. You don't want to melt the plastic.

if you've gone 12v, leds in red are available and burn cool. i've not tried 12v led with 6volts.

SuperBrightLEDs.com sells many LED bulbs that have bases/ratings that fit our 6v trucks. Many of those LEDs work with 6v and 12v negative and positive ground electrical systems.
I received the '41 to '46 fresh up kit from Jim Carter and it was a perfect fit. After reassembly this speedometer runs smooth and quiet. Unfortunately the spindle has disconnected from the speedcup. I was able to repair that with some superglue, but I think the orientation is off, and/or the magnets are weak. I have another old speedometer that may use the same speedcup, so I may be able to swap parts.
