i have a 1955 ist series 3100 p/u. it was restored in 2001. bone stock. when driving the truck, to stop or slow down, i have to push the brake pedal hard. there is no grinding. is this a sign of a master cylinder going bad? if the master cylinder is bad, should i replace it with a dual master cylinder? thanks in advance, jim

What procedures do you use to bleed and to adjust the brakes?

How many wheels are actually trying to stop? It sounds like you've got a couple of wheel cylinders corroded or gummed up, or maybe some collapsed flex lines that are keeping some of the brakes from working. Jack up wheels one at a time and see if you can turn the wheel while a helper applies the brake. Unless it's a daily driver, a lot of oddball stuff can happen to a brake system in 19 years.

A lot of the time this problem is a result of the drums being turned oversize and the shoes not being arced to match.

Possibly glazed shoes and drums from excessive heat at some time in its life.

Another possibility is grease or oil contamination on the shoes.

Don't randomly replace parts without first ascertaining what the actual problem is.
