If you were going to buy a coe would you prefer a chevy 5.3 or 6.0 ls engine or a cummins 5.9 in a 1941 chevy coe trying to get ideas.

I'd mount it on a 7400 with a Maxforce and an Alison. But, then again, I have bunches of those around.

Cummins have been mounted with the back end sticking out behind the cab to provide room for I'cooler, proper water radiator, very tight quarters no matter what one chooses.

Gassers can be mounted farther fwd.

Either way, such things as a disc brake axle, power steering, adequite cooling, engine noise, engine heat, air condidioning?, present challenges. '41 to '47 same body style.

With engine under cab, short engine compartment problems('41-'59) are not a problem.

The Cummins would be eye-popping. The sound would draw attention. I once saw an AD with one but I didn't get pictures.

I'm prejudiced, though, since we have a 2001 D*dge/Cummins.

What are you going o use the truck for? If a lugging hauler the diesel is the better choice. If a light hauler or cruiser the LS is the better. People deride the LS but if it is going to be a USER then go with something that is everywhere, parts are cheap and in every FLAPS, and people that know how to work on them are plentiful. When we raced we used a sbc engines and 9 inch Ford rear ends because parts, help, or knowledge was never more than a few steps away. Practical beats unique every time for a DRIVER.

I`m going to go with the 6.0 LS or 5.3 on this one. I've never been a "LS swap everything" guy, but they do make better sense in my opinion. No matter what kind of diesel you prefer, they are ALL big and heavy. Even the 12V/6bt. By the time you install a bigger radiator, intercooler, intercooler piping, etc... How much room do you have left? That tunnel in your floor might get quite large. Heck, even the old gasser in the COE trucks had updraft manifolds and carbs to make extra space. If you're looking at horsepower and torque numbers, the only thing a 6BT has over a 6.0 is low end torque. The 6.0 has a longer, higher RPM power and torque curve than the 6BT, in my opinion, it's the better choice. If you start looking at the 24V Cummins, things start getting more complicated, oh and like I said before, you'll be losing a ton of real estate. If you're looking at aftermarket parts and support, sure the Cummins is popular, but the LS is king of the aftermarket. Anyhow, my $.02, the 6.0 has the best of everything, towing, performance, aftermarket support.

If your going to use a Cummins I’d recommend the 4BT, the 6BT is far too long for the engine bay of a 41.

Get a bone stock 4.8 or 5.3 and you will be more than happy for a driver. Plenty of power and super quiet and dependable. I bolted my 144k 5.3 in a year ago and it still had stock plugs and wires on it. Ran like a champ and still got mid 20’s mpg. I finally broke down and threw some plugs in it though hahaha.

the 2.8 is designed for things like a jeep, not a COE hauler

for a hauler, I would be looking for a 6.0, 6.2, or building something a bit stout.

cant go wrong with a 6B, or even a modded 4BTAA

Wally/Montana said he saw an AD with a Cummins but not if it was a cab over. I can be done with a Regular AD but needs serious trimming of the AD to fit. It is a great running truck.
