Hey all, getting into my '51 chevy 3/4T and made some progress. after 20 years I Got it started and running well overall and it's exciting. But trying to figure out the right oil filter and not sure I got the right one and prob need some filter ID issues, and cant figure out if my oil filter is stock or aftermarket ? I have a filter, see photo, but not sure it seals right. Also, not sure if spring goes on btm or top, It seems simple enough, but not sure how this all works right. Any help appreciated

There was no "stock" (standard-equipment) oil filter.

An oil filter was an option/accessory.

There is an excellent Tech Tip on oil filters (see link at top of this page).

Not sure which filter container you have, but do read the Tech article mentioned by TC. There are many different types out there the photo shows just a few.
I do know the filter shown will not work. The center opening is much too large. You need a filter like the one in the photo. This happens to be a WIX 51100 that fits my AC S-6 filter. I suggest you take the container to your local parts house and try different ones until you get a fit. The spring goes between the filter and the lid.

Wix 51006. Any auto parts store should have them. Looks like an oil filter for an old tractor. Make sure it has the rubber ring/seal in the box.

Also, note on the middle shaft on the inside of the filter housing...at the top of that shaft, there is a tiny 1/16" diameter hole that is for the oil to gravity feed back down into the crankcase. Make sure it is clean and clear.

Thanks TC Patrick and Harold. I think you are right. Looking at Google images and the old Oil Filter Threads its easily an AC Delco and the filter you mentioned is the one that goes with it. I just matched what was in the truck when I bought it. At least I can pull the old filter-let the oil drip out, put the right one in, and not waste all the new oil. This part is better than a spin on cartridge type filter. Best and thanks all !! -Clem

Your oil filter canister has a bonus. The plug at the bottom allows you to drain the oil out of it. A lot of canisters do not have this feature making it a pain to remove the oil.

X2 You can buy a 1/8 NPT ball valve & put it in the drain hole along with a length of rubber fuel line which makes it a LOT easier to drain the housing excess without making a mess.

I work in a hospital and was able to get a big 60 cc syringe which helped me pull out the oil pretty fast. But I like your idea !! -Clem

Siphon hose works well there, too.
