Pioneer and ARP do not list one in their catalog but was wondering if a small block bolt would work? Is there a clearance concern with the cam to rod? I would check but mine is disassembled. If the diameter, length, and bolt head shape are similar, there's no reason a small block V8 rod bolt won't work. The rod bolts need to be a very snug slip fit in the cap, and maybe a very slight press fit in the rod so everything stays aligned when you resize the rod bore. I ran the connecting rod reconditioning department of a big machine shop in Nashville for several years as a part time job after teaching school all day! It was not uncommon for us to substitute a non-specified rod bolt for one that was not listed in our parts catalogs, with no failures that I'm able to remember.

| | | | | Joined: Dec 2017 Posts: 1,652 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2017 Posts: 1,652 | ARP rod bolt kit 132-6001 is what arp lists as fitting 230-292 but that while those fit a 230 and 250, I think the deal is they are 11/32 bolts and they are not correct for a 292 which uses a 3/8 bolt. Let me look at what I used when I rebuilt a set of 292 rods.
Ok, I looked at my 292 stuff and found a set of arp 135-6002 big block Chevy bolts. I compared them to a set of arp bolts on a set of rods built by the sisal/Kirby shop and they look to be the same bolts just longer. I compared them to a stock bolt and they are a little bit shorter but the knurles are in about the right place. Let me find an unmolested 292 rod.
Just to be complete I dug out my Santucci book and he says that 292 bolts are the same as small block chevy 350 3/8 Bolts. See Santucci's Power Manual, First Edition at p. 53, Second Edition at p. 63.

You are right, the 292 has a 3/8 rod bolt which has a larger diameter than a 194, 230, 250 rod bolt. From what I could tell the 3/8 small block rod bolt would fit the 292 rod but did not know if there were any clearance issues with the head of the rod bolt to the cam or something else. I have ordered ARP part number 134-6403 rod bolts to replace the originals. The rods will be resized with the new bolts. Thanks again. | | |
