Hello, what is the correct way to connect vacuum to a 283 distributor? The vehicle is a 58 Spartan with a 283, with vacuum for the hydrovac coming from the manifold. The former owner had "t-ed" into the hydrovac line to gain vac for the distributor, but I'm not sure if that was the original setup. Would this compromise the available vacuum for the distributor advance? Thanks for any insight that you may have.

Yes it does help....thanks! I do see a port with a small brass plug which looks to be about in line with the area just above the throttle plate. I will try hooking the vacuum to that port and see if there is a difference (it performs good right now at medium to high rpm, but hesitates notably when initially stepping on the gas). Note that my Chilton's and Motor's manuals describe the 2G carb in detail but do not mention or illustrate the port in question.

jaycoop, does your carb and distributor have the factory vacuum/centrifugal governor?

Good question, there is no governor. Perhaps should have mentioned this earlier, but the farmer who i purchased this truck from blew the original '58 283 and replaced it with this one which is from a 1964 sedan....so, the current motor (complete, including the 2 bbl Rochester carb and distributor which came with it) is not original to the truck.

You will probably then want to use ported vacuum from the base of the carb.
