I'm having a 1954 235 put in to replace my 216. Motor is in and I'm using the old starter from the 216. I's having trouble turning the motor over. Yes it's 6 volts. Rebuilt generator, new regulator but I believe 40 year old starter.

Would rebuilding the starter fix the issue? I'm sure the 225 will take a little more juice to turn over but it still should be able to do it. Very quick advice needed! Thanks!

First, before you blame the starter, make sure ALL your grounds are to clean bare metal. If it still cranks slow then consider a rebuild.🛠

Thanks, I'm going to look at it, make sure the grounds are good, proper #1 cable to the starter, etc. May take it and have it rebuilt anyway since its been on the truck since I've started working on it.

If you used the 216 flywheel you must use the 216 starter. Vise versa.

Just swapped the 235 and put the 216 starter on. It seems to turn the motor just fine, but it doesn't seem to fire. Mechanic says it will fire with a 12 volt jump. What needs to be done? I'm sick of waiting.

If its turning the motor, "just fine", why do you think its a starter issue? Did you check for spark, fuel?

A 6 volt starter will work fine on 12 volts. Just don't leave it on forever.

I think it needs a little more spark. Will start with 12v jump. I will try some starter fluid to confirm if it’s fuel

Ether wipes oil off the cylinder walls, best to use a small oil can or such with gasoline in it.

I wouldn't use starting fluid, spray choke ? carb cleaner would be my advice.

The more I research this seems to be a common problem. Need to check the timing, fuel pump, and carb for fuel when pumping the gas pedal. Problem is its at a shop and they're not working on it enough. I may have to pay them for what they did and get it the hell home to fix it myself. Frustrating to see your baby waiting for some love.
