I have a 84 Chevy column in my 49 and the dimmer switch sticks out like a sore thumb about midway down the column. I'm going to wrap the column with carpet so I have removed the switch. What are my options on where to mount the dimmer switch?

Probably the simplest would be an old school floor mounted switch in the upper left corner of the drivers foot well. Fairly cheap and easy to mount with a couple of screws. They also have wire plug connectors available that make the hook up easy and neat.

A few decades ago, General Motors sent a new vehicle to the engineering school at Georgia Tech for their evaluation and comments. Here's a partial transcript of the conversation that followed:

Tech: "Please tell your engineers to take that newfangled dimmer switch off the turn signal handle and put it back on the floorboard where the Lord intended it to be!"

GM: "We spent millions of dollars and lots of research and development time making that dimmer switch easy to reach and operate. We don't think it needs to be changed!"

Tech: "Maybe so, but all our faculty members, and most of our students keep getting their feet hung up in the steering wheel when they try to dim the lights!"

Thanks for all the info guys. I decided to pull the dimmer switch. I modified the plate the switch is mounted to and rehung it under the dash where it is easily excusable by hand. I then wrapped the column with the same carpet I have on the floor. Probably won't use it that much anyway as I don't drive that much at night and I always have my brights on. Never saw any bright lights flashed back at me so they must not be that bright. Came out with a nice cleaner look than before.
