I have made a ton of progress with our 53 build... working on some minor issues and thought I would ask for some guidance on where to clamp my new parking brake cables that from to the rear drums... In the attached picture, do I clamp down on the black cover portion or the silver end portion of the cable? Could not find any pictures so wanted to be sure by asking the experts!
Also, any trick to sliding the rubber boot over the adjustment rod? Hit the two cusser mark and decided to stop...
Thanks as always!
Tim

The clamp should go around the metal thimble right where the cable comes out.
Another member actually cracked the clamp trying to get it to grab the covered part of the cable. The attached pic is of an original installation. (I assume - I do know it's been there a long time.)

There is a post pending right now regarding cables being supplied which do not match original design intent. There should be a ferrule to grab, which also will act as a stop, so the cable stays put in the clamp. The ferrule needs a detent style groove for the clamp bolt, to clamp onto ferrule and hold cable from slipping.
The aftermarket, so far, does not have that. The pending post is waiting to see if a cable ordered from LMC Truck is correct. All other vendors have the NFG cable. Yours is the NFG cable. Woof359 is the member we are waiting to hear from. I would stand by on that install until it's figured out. You may have to return yours and get a LMC. If the LMC is also NFG. A solution will come forth from the group.
The issue is that all the vendors have an actual picture of the cable and we can see its NFG. LMC does not have a pic, however another member has purchased one from LMC in the past and it's correct. In my opinion, someone needs to purchase from them now and see if they still sell the good cable...or send a pic of the one they sell.
The rubber boot is also an identified issue. It's does not fit, it needs forced and then splits later.
I was in the military and never heard of Non-Functional Gear. But we know what you mean.

The Filling Station has listed (but not currently available) a metal sheathed cable that they call the original style, and include a picture (attached), that conveniently masks the critical portion at the forward end. Can't tell if it's NFG or not. The also sell the vinyl sheathed NFG cable.

My last post, on that post I linked, is the most promising cable I've seen. From J. Carter. You can't see his cable's detent groove either BUT in the pic of the available boot, you can see a ferrule with a detent. Such a difficult thing to verify. I can't believe it!!
To add to the fun, the long bed cable is on back order. The one that says: "produced just like GM made them".
The short bed cable, which is available now, has no pic and does not say: "produced just like GM made them". But it does say "We have stopped marketing the black vinyl covered cables. Their quality, including no boot to keep water out of the inside, was not what we wanted, so we made what was correct".
LMC does not have a cable like that for $19.95.... If you have a short bed, Buy the J. Carter cable and do it QUICK
thats the same cable I have, Im calling LMC later this morning to see if they carry the correct cable with metal sheath with detent in about 10 minutes
Woof Looks like in your thread on the subject, that LMC carries the correct cable, and for less than half the cost of Jim Carter's offering. Thanks for following up on that. Let us know how it works out when you get them.
It looks like I have the NFG cable, an AC Delco bought from RockAuto, but I have the technology to make them work, being a cheapskate.

Thank you Phil, looks like the LMC is a winner. I stand happily corrected. It has a detent groove. Kudos to you and Woof for giving this info. The J. Carter one, hopefully, has the groove also and it is metal sheathed. Twice the price of LMC.
