When did wheels start to be known as rims? Ever since I was a Texaco gas station attendant, (50 years ago), the rim was part of a wheel. I know I'm about to be put out to pasture, however, describing something that it isn't sort of bugs me. I'm an old crotchety member of the accuracy club!

It's just a term that has crept into the vernacular. Kind of like valve cover vs rocker cover, rear end vs differential or three on the tree vs three speed column shift. Some mistakenly refer to exhaust manifolds as headers. There are probably more.

Wheels is the correct term, rims is what people who don’t know cars call the chrome things they buy at Discount Tire for their Altima.

Exhaust manifolds are cast iron, headers are stainless tubes.

I pitch in with Brian. A rim is just what it says...the outer perimeter edge of the wheel. The part that keeps the tire from popping off (hopefully).

All kinds of names associated with vehicles have different names. All are regional, or hot rodder talk, nick names, etc. Rims are wheels. stealies, moonies, chromies, chrome rims, Dubs, 20's................
Pipes are duals.

I didn't know what a bubbler was. A New York guy kept saying bubbler. Actually he said "bubbla". We call it a drinking fountain out west.

What really bothers me is when someone refers to tires as wheels.

"Wheels" can also refer to the whole truck. My wheels.

I think of these wheels when someone refers to a part of an old vehicle.

My trucks are trucks - the trucks that I still have all have 4 wheels (and, you will like this) they all have a spare tire. blush

So in the chart..........what part of the wheel is "Rim Size"? Does not seem like it's THE rim. The RIM/outer diameter on a 16" wheel measures greater than 16". Yet the chart says rim is 16". In the chart, the RIM is actually the bead seat. Denoting the size of the WHEEL! chug shake wave ShA BaM

No, a motor is what has wires hooked to it and turns stuff like fans and pumps.
An engine is what makes our trucks go.
But then there are search engines as well. ohwell

So it maybe that the outer part of a rim is a rim? The rim rim thingy when describing what got bent in a pothole! SHOWING the repair shop, "My rim got bent...repair shop, no it didn't, just the rim. I know, that's what I just said." Further explanation now required. I wonder how far this one will go!

I made rims, discs, and wheels for 25 years. A disc is a disc, and a rim is a rim, and a rim and a disc put together is a wheel.
