To mount a V8 in a stovebolt truck with the right bellhousing on the M420 transmission, does the engine/transmission have to be relocated forward a few inches to clear the firewall?

Does anyone make an engine swap kit with the engine and transmission mounts necessary to do this in an AD truck?

HotRodDad, most of the catalog houses sell the cross members for the front and rear. I am in the process of doing the same thing but heck, I don't even have my body off the chassis yet. Speaking of the m420 tranny, what is that...the original 4 speed? I do not know of any "kit".

Yes. It's a Muncie 4-speed with a super granny gear (7.06:1) for first. Usually for street driving, you use 2nd thru 4th.

I placed the trans in it's original location to avoid a bunch of extra fab work and driveshaft rebuilding. I just clearanced the firewall some to fit the distributor. If you went with a small cap distributor, you may be able to fit it without modification.

I used the bellhousing mounts for a 55-57 Chev for my rear and using a 73-77 Chevelle trany mount (cut to width and drilling holes) ,I was able to use 55-57 Chevy front mounts as well. All it cost me was some time and $20 for all 4 mounts at an Antique car swapmeet.Actually I bought 2 sets of the rear ones for $20 and sold one set for $30 ,so it was free.

Hot Rod Dad, make it easy on yourself, try Classic Parts (aka
Chevy Duty) & get the V8 adaptor cross member (Pt # 79-405
for around $55) & V8 motor pads (Pt# 79-015 for $20 ea.) & they also have a std. trans (Pt# 79-505) crossmember that
works well for the AD's for around $45!
They & Brothers have a great tech line of people to give you some good advice / help !
Hope this helps, I went the 350 crate route w/400 turbo,
you can see it in Classic Truck mag. (pg. 86 / Jan 2007 new
issue !)

Thanks! That's all helpful advice.

I've been looking at the crate motors from GMPP. To get an engine in the truck fast, I really should just buy the base 290 horse 330 lb-ft 350. Later on, I can buy the Vortec heads and upgrade it for another $560 bucks. Then I'll pick up 40 hp and 50 lb-ft.
...Unless I feel like I can afford the step up initially.

What about clearancing the steering box? What did you guys do about that?

Hot Rod Dad... If you use the ram horn style exhaust manifolds, they will clear the steering box. We are talkin 47-54 chevy truck, correct? I concure with labluver, buy and install the universal crossmembers, they are pretty easy to install and you can set the engine and trans where you want it. No need to cut the firewall. I would recommend you rebuild the front end. New king pins, bushings, shackles and brakes. You might want to install disc brakes for the front, just alittle stopping piece of mind.
