For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 29 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2006 Posts: 29 | Looking for info on drop spindles for a 64 c-10. I have found complete 2 1/2 drop kits for approx $1000.00, I guess the only way to do this is to convert over to disc? Are these kits as straight forward as they appear, has anyone experienced problems with this swap, or does anyone know of a more economical way to do this. I have considered buying drop spindles and gathering everthing else at the boneyard, but am not sure what year parts I need. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 613 Member | | Member Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 613 | i bought the drop spindles and got the rest from a 1980 c10 including the booster.but ask the manufacturer what interchanges first. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 28 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 28 | You can use any complete 73-87 Chevy 1/2 ton front end. The cross member and all suspension will bolt right up to your 64 frame with no modifications. While at the junkyard try and get the power brake booster, brake lines, proportioning valve, steering box, p/s hoses, and p/s pump. This makes the swap a piece of cake and have done it many times. See if you can get the rearend out of the same truck if available and buy a kit from chevyduty that will make it work in your truck (come with new brackets and an adjustable panhard bar). Keep in mind that your truck will now be a five lug and you'll need to change your wheels. It will ride great and stop even better and drop spindles and springs are cheap for this model truck (73-87). Companies like CCP and DJM sell them resonable...if your a smart shopper you can get a entire suspension done for around a grand! | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 28 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 28 | Be sure not to get the front end off of any "heavy half" truck...they have 1 1/4" rotors as opposed to the standard 1" rotors...im not sure but i think the spindles might be beefier too. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 613 Member | | Member Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 613 | and then he will still have to buy drop spindles.just buy the spindles for a 64. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 28 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 28 | The point i am trying to make is updating the whole suspension, steering and braking system for what you would probrobly spend trying to cobble together an already worn out 64 front end. Do it your way,it is only one suggestion. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 2 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 2 | Originally posted by cacuccv: Looking for info on drop spindles for a 64 c-10. I believe my cost's back then where around $700.00. The draw back was no cores on the items I purchased.I also cut the coils in the back 4" to give it a nice stance. I've never been happier, the truck stops on a dime, and if you plan on dropping a 350 motor in like I did, then a disc brake system is a must. I don't think I have to tell you what happens when you drop a 350 crate motor in a truck that has drum brakes and a single resevoir master. The only draw back I've had, and I plan to fix after I get done with the body and interior, is the lower control arm ride height. It's not a pretty feeling when you go over a speed b ump, no matter what speed. I'll keep you guys posted on what I do and how far I get done on the body and cab floor, and I'll try to post pics too. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 29 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2006 Posts: 29 | I purchased a 6lug 21/2 disc/drop kit from McGaughys and installed it with 3inch drop springs, I haven't measured width yet but it seems wider. I figured at this time it would be a better deal to get everything in one shot, but I still have not addressed the booster and master cylinder it'll come later now to deal with the dropping the rear end maybe 4"? | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 29 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2006 Posts: 29 | To add to my previous posting, I have the factory power brake booster in my 64 1/2 ton with automatic trans, and am in the process of converting from drums in the front to discs. I have been told I can use the existing booster add a dual outlet master cylinder and proportioning valve to do this, but it seems that the existing booster would not have the same output as a later one designed for discs. Anyone know if I can use the existing booster? | | |
