Alain, I Have been running one of those & works great. Only thing is it requires 12 volts, your rig is 6 volts unless it has been converted over to 12 volts at some time.

Pertronix (yes I know) makes a 6 volt negative and a 6 volt positive ground unit. About $130. Installs in about 45 minutes and you keep the points and condenser in the glove box if needed in and emergency.🛠

Alain, the Pertronix conversion is super easy and from the outside no one but you will know it’s electronic. There has been complaints from some on here that the unit was nothing but trouble but others have had many years of trouble free driving. Remove the points/condenser and associated wires. The igniter goes where the condenser was, using 1 or 2 screws. The 2 wires from the igniter exit the distributor through the hole where the original wire enters. Wiring is simple and easy. Put the rotor back on and the cap and fire it up. No gap to set. Regap your plugs and make sure you’re not using metal core plug wires. Happy cruising.🛠

Bonjour Alain,

Ok, in English...Using the Langdon distributor is easy and it looks like the original unit. You may need to install a larger gauge wire from your ignition switch to the distributor but this is very easy. It has been mentioned here that the Pertronix has problems. Personally I think these units are not good. Too many of them cease to function. As one more comment: I have the Langdon distributor. It is a conversion of another GM distributor and parts are available. I hope my use of the French language will not upset the Academie Francaise. Maybe it will give them some humor. The last time I saw them (in 1997) two of them were smoking too much.

HEI works fine, no ignition resistor, 10 or 8 gauge feed wire.

Wouldn't just a GM HEI have dropped right in?
What exactly did you do? Built in coil or external? Are you saying you used a Pertronix?

The first solution to a non problem is: stay with original points. Second and third is Langdon, Pertronix.

First: original points 6v ($30 - Distributor Cap, Distributor Rotor, and Premium Spark Plug Wires; 6v coil $10)

Second: Pertronix 6v ($130 - use original coil or 6v coil $10)

Third: Langdon 12v ($222 w/coil and ignition wires)

Of course, just in case, carry a set-up spare standard distributor

Brand new GM HEI set up for 216/235/261 on Ebay- - - - -$114.99- - - - -no core charge! When it smokes the offshore module that's in it, buy an OEM GM item at the local parts store!

Any 4-pin HEI module from the mid-1970's to the early 1980's before Electronic Spark Control came out- - - - -they're all the same. If you need to change the pickup coil it would have to be one for an even-fire V6 or an inline six like a 250 or 292, etc.

Tim,
It would depend who is standing on the other side of the counter. If it's some kid that only knows how to push bottons on a keyboard , all it would get you is a blank stare. If it would be someone that had been selling parts for 10yrs, it would probably get you what you needed.
Or you could just tell them you need an HEI module for a 1976 chevy nova with a 250 cu.in. 6 cyl engine.

Thanks, Tommy

My ignorance of HEI is showing.

If for some reason I ever used a HEI unit, I'd carry a spare stock distributor, or I'd carry a spare module and/or a spare HEI distributor (if I took long trips).

I've been running HEI's in most of my vic's for the past 30+ years. The only failure that I had was a 200,000+ miles standard points distributor on a 250.

The EBay sold complete replacement HEI distributors are an easy swap allowing you to keep your original distributor as an emergency spare. The only problem I found when doing the swap on a ‘62 235 was close tolerances with the block. Didn’t have to make it fit it just fit close. Good luck.🛠

Been running a mini HEI from Langdon's for several years, works great. I take long trip, last fall the wife & I put about 1,200 miles on a trip up into BC Canada, runs like a champ.
http://www.langdonsstovebolt.com/store/online-catalog/#!/Stovebolt-Mini-HEI-for-GM-216-235-261-&-GMC/p/1222040/category=18665949

I run plug wire to fit a later Ford 300 L6 & platinum AC Delco #7 plugs (gm p/n: 19360569).

The distributor cap was within 1/16 inch of the block when installed. Those systems use the GM large cap not the small cap like Langdon’s unit.

The real HEI fits. If it contacts the side cover or the block, a little careful grinding of the edge of the distributor cap or the block might be required. Stay FAR away from that conversion unit that uses the original distributor and some sort of cobbled-up adapter for an obsolete Chrysler Corp. trigger unit and a GM module.

Yes, the large housing distributor will fit- - - -I have installed several of them. The main body of the distributor rises considerably higher above the block than the original housing, and there's just enough room for it to clear the engine properly. The inexpensive ones sold on Ebay are made overseas, and I don't trust the electronic parts in them. OEM General Motors modules and pickup coils fit, and swapping to them makes me have a lot more faith in their reliability.

Any HEI distributor for a 250 or 292 cubic inch inline six cylinder engine from the mid-1970's to the mid-1980's can be adapted to fit a 216, 235, or 261 engine by machining the large diameter mounting flange on the housing away and fabricating a sliding clamp to allow it to be positioned properly for the drive gear to engage the camshaft and the oil pump correctly. That is all the vendors of those HEI units do to "adapt" them from their original application. Posting Ebay links on a general discussion forum thread is discouraged by the moderators in the PC Patrol, so I will be glad to forward a few links to you by private message. I've been doing my own conversion machining on both the large diameter distributors and the ones sold by Langdon's for several years, with zero issues where reliability or fit is concerned.

The photo of the HEI distributor you posted is one of the 250/292 items that has been modified to fit the early Chevy engine. The early inline six engine in the Toyota Land Cruiser was a virtual clone of the Chevy 235 engine, made under license from GM, I believe.
