We need to buy a good carburetor for a 228 gmc 1951. it doesn't need to be an original, just want something that's dependable and runs good. it has a Rochester now but we can't get it to stop flooding. any good suggestions would be apricated.

Is the float drowned? Is the float level correct?

"The ABC's of carburetion- - - -Always Buy Carter"! Give Jon (Carb King) a call and ask him which Carter YF was designed for that engine- - - -then buy one. Problem solved!

Thanks Jerry, but Carter did not specify a YF specifically for the GMC 228. GMC 228 original Zenith carburetors are fairly easy to find, and nowhere near as expensive as the GMC 270 carburetors. I would suggest an original Zenith for the 228.

But before doing anything to the carburetor; check the fuel pressure. Very easy to blame the Rochester B for anything that needs blaming (and generally one would be correct wink ); but even a Rochester B has no chance if someone put on an electric fuel pump without a bypass style regulator, or one of the new off-shore made mechanical fuel pumps. We tested a brand new 2019 pump from a very well known American company (this one made in China) that was rated 5 1/2 psi and put out 13.

Testing to determine the faulty component is important.

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

he has check everything installed new kit set float level several times. I even had him set the float down more than spec. so the float wouldn't have to come up so far to shut it off, no good. check as well as he can the movement of the float and that seems to be ok. the one thing he hasn't done is to check fuel pump pres. its a mechanical type and been on the truck for years and always performed good. can they all of a sudden produce to much pressure? I've always had them go bad with not enough pres. not to much. mind everyone this is not just a weeping gasket its a good steady stream pouring out the bottom of the underside of the carb float bowel.

Jon, right now he just wants to make it run so he can drive it. do you have a carb that will work for him? and how much?
thanks Jay D.

Have him test the fuel pressure, before ordering a carburetor.

If you can’t fix the one you have then:

Second vote for the original Zenith carburetor.
There’s a good reason GMC chose the Zenith over the others ...........

Jay - with all due respect, these forums are for technical questions, not sales.

The forum moderators are pretty lenient, but maybe that is because we try not to need their moderation.

Jon.

my boy finally checked fuel pres. its a steady 5psi. we are still with the idea that the floats are binding up on something. he going to try and see if he can get them right. there should be a measurement for float drop we can't seam to find that does anyone know what it should be? I wish I had an old carb top that we could cut away the part over the floats then one could look at the floats in the float bowl and see what they were doing.
