I'm putting back together the 54 235 engine. On the timing cover on the bottom of the cover there are two bolt holes and I have bracket with bolts that go into the holes in the end of the bracket. And the bracket lines up perfectly to the two bottom bolt holes on the timing cover. But those bolts have shoulders on them. Is something suppose to be mounted there?? I took this apart 6 months ago. Cant remember.
Well, since the oil pan is already on the engine, you've got a problem- - - - -those bolts are supposed to go through the front main bearing cap and screw into the threaded holes in the timing cover. The stovebolt engine was designed that way back when it was a common practice to adjust the main bearing clearance with shims during an "in the frame" overhaul, and with the engine in the car, those bolts were difficult to reach from the front. When they stopped adjusting the mains with shims in mid-1954, they didn't change the orientation of the bolts. Jerry
