Would this indicate the king pins have been previously replaced and the top cover left off or was this a factory practice? It seems the pins will need to be knocked out from the top to the bottom but that will require the removal of the hub. Has anyone encountered this problem before and, if so, any suggestions? My last dealings with king pins was about 60 years ago on grandpa’s farm and then I was just a gofer and a watcher.

Peened as in hammered over like a rivet head, or staked as Tim said. Staking is done with a punch and hammer.

You can push kingpins up or down. There is a way to use the weight of the truck to knock them out. I have done it before years ago , but don't remember how I did it. Hopefully someone with a better memory will come along shortly.
