I’ve purchased a different 3 speed that came out of a early 70s van with the same engine (250ci) that my truck has. I was lead to believe it would be a straight forward swap out. Unfortunately it’s not that simple. It looks as though I’ll need different shift linkage and shorter prop shaft. '37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires.
'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

Look in the junk yards, online forums for 67-72 chevy/gmc trucks. The drive shaft can be shortened are if your searching junk yards it's probably 3 inches shorter.

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,098 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,098 | 67 6cyl trucks came with the Muncie 318 non syncro trans with the short tail housing. As you found out the differences are the side cover, shift rods, and length. The later Saganaw unit could also could require a fine spline front yoke depending on the year. All of this can be worked around, the rods can be replaced or bent to fit the later side cover and the driveshaft can be modified. The Saganaw is a much better transmission overall and worth the effort. The Muncie is about 15" vs the Saganaw at about 22".
