I finally got the T-5 installed on my 52 chevy. Everything seems to be working great but now there is a noise coming underneath the cab. The noise goes away if you tighten the clutch linkage (pull the throw out bearing as far away from the pressure plate fingers as possible) until you shift it a couple times while driving. The driveshaft was cut too short but I do not feel any wobble. I am getting one made but is it possible there may be another problem?

Did you cut the collar & front shaft off on the T-5? Did you get the pilot brg. back in the crank far enough? Is the trans hitting the floor? Did you put a mount on the rear of the trans.?

i believe you have to as the wrench says trim down the pilot shaft and round collar that are present on the T5 for users of 216 & 235 motors.
larger motors do not need this which larger motors I can't remember.
certain;y a 250 and 292 do not need this done. 261? 230's ?

anyone know ??????

The T-5 pilot shaft and collar were trimmed down to match the original 3 speed. I did not replace the pilot bearing. Could having the pressure plate on too tight cause this? I did not use a torque wrench on it.

I did not put a mount on the back of the transmission.

Overtightening the clutch bolts will not hurt untill one breaks. Some bolters claim they have been running them for a long time without a rear mount with no problems. I put an aftermarket crossmember with a mount mine. That long aluminum tranny is not made to hang like that. I can,t imagine what that noise is. I,ve heard the floor on the AD,s are pretty close to the trans. If it is contacting it it would make noise. Did you check the pilot bushing?

I am pulling the driveshaft tonight to have a new one that is the correct length built. While I have the driveshaft out I will start up the truck and run it through the gears and see if this is a vibration from the driveshaft being too short. I will also pull the flywheel cover and take a look at the throwout bearing (it is a new bearing) to make sure it is releasing and engaging properly. Hopefully I will have an update tommorrow.

Can you run the transmission through the gears safely without the output yoke installed?

I sort of thought the extension housing bushing and yoke held the output shaft steady, not to mention sealing the housing from flinging oil.

I have an extra yoke that I will put on the tranny before running it through the gears.

So... You guys are saying this may be a bad idea. Guess I will just adjust the linkage and wait for the new driveshaft. Thanks for the input.

that's my read on this post.. be careful, or you might damage or be missing some body parts!!! yours and the trucks.

I'm assuming it's also a one piece driveshaft? remember that 2 piece drive shafts must have the ujoints properly phased (lined up) or you will get vibration.

Another quality post.
