I was asked to post this by a member who wasn't sure how to do it.

After taking out the old cardboard headliner of my 1940 Chevy pickup, I decided to replace it with thick leather from Tandy. The $120.00 leather piece was about 26 inches by 58 inches.

I attached the center support roof rib to the leather and cut the sides longer than I actually needed, based on setting the old liner piece on top of the new leather. ( The leather piece is not symmetrically rectangular! ) I installed the leather liner and the center rib in the truck cab. This left the leather sides hanging on both sides of the roof support centerline, inside the cab.

It was then possible to get the leather ends bolted on top of the door rubber seals above the doors, one at a time. The trim was not installed at this point! Each side was also bolted into place.

Tricky to get the bolts lined up through the leather headliner; so I bought bolts that were 1 inch long instead of 1/2 inch. There is plenty of extra room behind the steel walls.

I did not try to install the trim until the leather was bolted in place around the complete perimeter. The trim was installed after the header was installed.

Installing the trim was possible by taking each bolt out and gently reinstalling it with the trim piece in place. ONE BOLT AT A TIME. It took about an hour to do the fit-up and another hour to install the trim. Use a small punch to locate the holes.

The final trim on the leather was easily done with a cardboard cutter after the trim was fully installed.
