Using an Ledlights 6V neg gnd LED electronic flasher unit in my Grote 966-4 turn signal. This is in a 49 3100 with alternator. Turn signals work fine but pilot light goes out shortly after install. "P" terminal on flasher is dead. Ledlights advise the flasher voltage range is 5-7V whereas my alternator delivers 7.5V output. Anyone using a LED electronic flasher that will work with an alternator? Thanks

Would an led bulb in the switch (for pilot) solve this?

I have led in rear but standard in front so Im still using standard flasher

I think the problem lies with the flasher operating voltage of 5-7 volts and my alternator puts out 7.5 volts. An LED pilot might work but at $15 a pop for the flasher, I'll have to decide if I can just live with no pilot or spring for another flasher and try the LED pilot. Thanks for the input.

Ed, I just discovered my pilot light issue was partially a grounding issue. While chasing down a brake light problem I re-cleaned the steering column under the Signal-Stat 900 flasher switch. I'd initially scraped the paint to provide a ground when I installed turn signals. After a quick sanding, the pilot light will flash a couple times then stop. Next step will be to remove the bulb and see if I can spot a contact/continuity issue.

Added in edit; this afternoon I pulled the top cover off the ol SignalStat 900 turn-signal switch, then pulled the pilot light bulb. All looked good, grounding it to a proven ground made no change. When the turn-signals are activated, the bulb will light up very brightly, flash a time or two, then dim and not flash. My current theory is it's all related to the fact that I'm running a old stock, flasher unit. With LED's in the rear and stock incandescent bulbs up front, the flasher isn't seeing sufficient load to operate the pilot bulb. A weak theory I know. The test would be to reinstall the incandescent bulbs in the rear and see what happens. If I do, I'll report the results. The problem is, if the test causes the pilot to work, I'm not sure what good that is since I don't know how to fix the problem. A digital or electronic flasher unit ? When I've tried those in the past, the turnsignals flashed unacceptably fast.

Good Luck,

RonR

I run standards in front. And LED’s in rear

Standard flasher works for me
Im 12 volts. I think OP is 6 volts

My pilot works ok with this set up

My problem was not being able to hear the clicker and the bar of steering wheel blocking pilot

..my fix...

DADS50, Nice! Yes on OP (and my truck) being 6V. Should this be a problem? My truck with alternator has about 7.5V when running.

The LEDlights flasher range is 5-7V according to their customer rep. I think my problem is same as moparguy since my alternator also puts out 7.5V. Resigned myself to no pilot light since the flashers do work and click.
