What are my options with a 9" F*rd rearend. A shop should be able to shorten the current driveshaft and change the front yoke right? Is this cheaper/easier if you have the T-5 front yoke and driveshaft? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 1,317 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 1,317 | Hey,
Me again....get the S10 driveshaft...it only needed to be shortened 1-1/4".....to fit a GM diff. The total for a cut/balance was $55.00. Total fabrication from scratch was a whole lot more. Might even consider picking up a junkyard shaft with the 9"rear flange. The ideal way would be to check with a driveshaft specialty shop for prices and suggestions. Just my $.02..again. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 99 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 99 | I already have a driveshaft that fits the Saginaw 3 speed and the F*rd 9". Could this be shortened and a new yoke put on at the same time? I think I am going to get the front yoke off the S-10 and have it put on the driveshaft I already have. Never done a non-stock tranny swap so not a lot of experience with modifying them but this should work. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | The yoke on drive shaft you have will probably fit. They were the same for years except the TH400. There is a mom-pop driveshaft shop in KC. that is good & reasonable. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 2,031 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 2,031 | the T5 yoke is the same as any 350 tranny yoke (which is pretty standard). you will have a 5 lug and 6 lug pattern for wheels now. rear end info:: my .02 (if you don't have a modern rear end...) go w/ a chevy rear end 10 or 12 bolt 6 lug

Thanks for the tips guys. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 | The output shaft of the t-5 will fit any standard chevy yoke. You can grab one off the shelf at a hot rod or racing shop, or you can pull one from the junk yard.
If I were you I'd just go to a driveline shop and tell them what you need. They can make you a drive shaft with u-joints and the front and rear yokes you need for around 100-150, which is probably how much you'll spend trying to cobb together the parts and have them build it using your parts. So, you'll end up spending more time doing it the hard way. Call the driveline shop to find out exactly what they need to know from you and how much it'll cost, I think you'll be surprised.

There is a local shop that can shorten and balance the original shaft and change the yoke if necessary for around $50. Came highly recommended by the guy helping me put in the T-5. | | |
