I recently finished a complete wire harness installation. Part of this install included a reproduction light switch.
When I mounted the switch and pulled it out. The dash lights didnt come on and smoke came out.
I took the switch out of the dash and discovered that the little brass tab that moves around the spring for dimmer had gotten red hot.
I did notice that the dimming function is barely noticeable and the little tab was weak against the spring. I bent the tab towards the spring to make better contact and it hasn't happened again.
Anyone have a similar experience? Any idea what is happening?

I believe the switch has a thermal overload breaker. If it does or it's fused, You are good to go. The "spring" is a coil to act as a rheostat/resistance to vary the voltage to dash bulbs, as a dimmer.

Had something to do with the dome light being switchable on the light and switchable on the light switch. It would only happen when the lightswitch was grounded to the dash after install.
I disconnected the dome light wire from the dome light peg on the switch and ran it straight to power (fused).
