Does anyone recognize this transmission?

The seller says it's a five speed, and I haven't seen one like this before.

I thought it was an sm420 when I first stumbled across it on marketplace, but after a closer look, I don't know what it is.

You may try looking at a 1965 2+ ton Chevrolet. Does it show signs of a screw on bracket near the shift knob. The small (looked like a throttle cable knob), for the two speed rear end. Five speed was used on those old boys. Doc.

3 shift rails means most likely a 5 speed, although the starboard one being slightly lower might be reverse only? Probably direct in high gear. Pull top cover to check. Might look up factory options for year and weight of truck. Not New Process, looks different than Clark?

The guy is a few hours away from me, so I won't be able to lay eyes on it till sometime next week.

I'm wondering if it's an early 4 speed variant or one of the old crashboxes, or an sm420 predecessor, but the yoke on the back makes me think it might not be since I think most of those older vehicles had torque tubes.

Yes, that's the Chevrolet truck 4-speed used from 1931 thru 1947...there should be a date code on top of the top cover. It's also missing the reverse lock-out finger lever and rod.

What engine is it connected to?

The bellhousing looks like a 1947 second series truck(has casting for clutch/brake mount, but undrilled). It looks like it has a full side cover and I see a short style distributor cap next to it.
I suspect it is a 216, although it could be a splash 235.

That's what I was thinking, old 4 speed. It looked way to small to be a 5 speed

Thanks for the ID

I've got detail pictures of two crash box 4 speeds that look identical to that trans. PM your email address to me and I'll be glad to send them to you. One is from a 1946 1/2 ton pickup that had a torque tube, and the other one is from a 1947 big rig with a splash oiler 235 and an open driveline.

Just post them in a reply, so everyone can see.

I'm convinced it's not a 5 speed at this point, so I won't be going to take a closer look at it.

Sorry, my pic host went belly-up, and I haven't set up another one yet. Can't post directly from my computer to the Stovebolt site! Your pics are definitely a 4 speed crash box.
