Thanks | | | | | Joined: Jan 2019 Posts: 123 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2019 Posts: 123 | I've change the coil, distributor on the 54 chevy pu. i have aligned the timing mark on the flywheel with the pointer. i have spark at all the plugs. i think i have the plug wires coming from the distributo correct with the firing order. any suggestion for getting the engine running. it did run fine before i removed all the engine external components to paint the engine and under hood. where do you recomment the fiming mark be. how about the vacuum spark advance be set. i currently have is set at the mid point. Any help will be appreciated. Frank | | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 2,306 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 2,306 | Does it fire at all . If you have spark something should pop unless not getting gas. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,746 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,746 | The timing ball aligns twice- - - -once when the #1 cylinder is ready to fire, and again when #6 is on TDC of the compression stroke. Remove the valve cover and watch the valve rocker arms on the #6 cylinder as you turn the crankshaft clockwise from the front. The last rocker in line back by the firewall should open and start closing. When the next valve in line starts to move, look at the distributor and use the spark plug wire the rotor is pointing toward as #1. Then follow clockwise with the rest of the wires- - -5-3-6-2-4. The engine should start and run. Jerry

Remove the valve cover and number one spark plug. Put your finger over spark plug hole and have someone turn the engine (power off!) clockwise until you fell pressure which is the compression stroke. Once you feel it continue turning until the timing ball lines up with the pointer. That will be top dead center of number one cylinder. Remove distributer cap and see where the rotor is pointing. Use that tower as number one and land the rest of the wires in clockwise direction 5,3,6,2,4. Engine should run. I usually time my 235 about 8 degrees BFTDC. Manuals say TDC but that was with 50's fuels. | | |
