I'm in the process of putting my engine back together. I just got it back from the machine shop. My friend wants to know how to adjust the solid lifters in a newly rebuilt engine.

Thanks Steve

You could follow this link to the tech tips ,

https://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/valveadjustment.htm

But I recommend you buy a shop manual for this and all the other help it will provide .

Here is a similar adjustment technique, with links to Shop Manuals and other information.

Valve lash settings for various stovebolt engine years and sizes are provided at links at the bottom of that pages.

Adjust the valve lash to .002" over the "hot" specification during assembly. There will be a little noise during the initial run-in, but the valves won't tighten up and possibly burn. After 20-30 minutes' cam break-in time, shut down and use the companion cylinder method of valve adjustment to tweak the clearance. It should be pretty close. I've done that with several hundred new engines.

If you have good understanding of the 4-stroke cycle, you don't need a method. Just do one cylinder at a time.
The methods save some steps and engine rotations, but all result in the same condition.
