I just bought this 1950 3100 truck and it wasn't running. Before the weather turned bad, I found the timing bb on the flywheel but don't see any timing pointer to compare the bb with. My shop manual showed up today and looked thru it but I don't see anything in the manual either.

There is a timing-mark hole on the forward face of the clutch housing, above the starter, on the passenger side. The pointer inside of the hole should line up with the ball in the face of the flywheel. This will get you close to #1 or #6 TDC. When number one is firing, both valves should be closed.

Figure 6 is a picture of the timing mark from an automobile manual.

That image is a little hard to interpret.

Hower, it shows the timing mark pointed on the forward side of clutch housing (on the distributor side of the engine).

Here is a pic of the timing mark. If yours is gone try this simple homemade tool to locate TDC. I also attached the tune-up spec sheet for this motor.

If you could feel or see were the pointer was you could put a mark with white paint .or if there is a hole we’re it was use a old drill bit of the correct size and grind it to shape and red lock tite it in

That's a good idea... Started snowing today.. Once it clears off I will see what I can do.

I really appreciate everyone's help.. I'm hoping that settng the timing, setting the points. And rebuilding the one barrel carb will at least get it to start...

Wait a minute, I may have been looking at the wrong hole... On the opposite side of the engine from the starter is a 1" hole thru the bell housing.. That's where I was looking.. I would never have figured that out if it wasn't for the pictures that was posted showing the correct hole in relation to the starter..

Don't worry. You are not the first one to make that mistake.

I do not know; however, my 1960 261 in a large school bus had that hole on its clutch housing (on the driver's side).

As I mentioned before, I once "timed" a hole in the flywheel through that hole on the driver's side. It barely ran but it did run.

Our solution.......

because our semi cab over military trucks are impossible to get under the hood........ before we install the cab..... and do the test run of the engine we do the following.....

1 establish...... using the GM little hole.....exactly where the timing mark is and the BB in the flywheel......and paint in vivid color.

2 crawl underneath and with the sheet metal cover removed from the bottom of the bell housing..... punch and paint a yellow paint dot on the back of the clutch body.

3 before the floor goes down.... remove the inspection cover on the bellhousing ( 2 screws) and mark TDC punch and yellow paint dot on the clutch body.

4 grind a small groove at 12 o'clock on the harmonic balancer and paint as above.

You may never know when you will need either of them................ for example when turning the flywheel by hand from underneath for setting valves etc.....

Once our cabs are in place it is a pure nightmare and can't even use a timing light for lack of room.

I have set up a few late model small block V8's with the #1 timing mark at the 12:00 position to time on the #8 cylinder- - - -much easier to reach and see in the race car with the timing mark 90 degrees clockwise.
