I have a 49 3100 truck. The emergency/parking brake seems to be all there from pedal to cables up to rear drum. When I press the park brake pedal it engages (locks) and releases. However it doesn’t hold the truck. Any suggestions where to start. The cables look very old. Is there any adjustment or the park brake? Any help is appreciated.

Are you sure that the cables aren't broken, or at least unattached inside the drum?

There is an adjustment but more than likely those old looking cables are rusted solid. With a helper, crawl under the truck and look to see if the cables are moving in the sheaths while your helper applies and releases the parking brake. It will be evident as they move quite a bit.

I know that the locking nut in the picture is loose. It isn’t my picture but shows exactly what I am talking about.

There is an adjustment procedure on pg 5-14 of the 49-51 shop manual. Check "OldOnlineChevyManuals" if you don't have a hard copy. Just did mine yesterday without any problems.
