REASEARCH TOPIC
Can anybody point me in the right direction to a light truck 2 speed differential information. I would like to install one in a 3/4 ot 1 ton. The ideal is to get decent highway and good pulling power behind a V-8 or late model diesel. I have not been able to find any info on how they work or if it will be avaiable in this weight class.
maybe 308:1 or 335:1 over 390:1 or 4.11:1
Thanks for anything you may know.
Brad

good luck! you're talkin ratios that are standard for the 1/2T's, only 2spd rears I've ever heard of are for the 1½T and up, and have ratios like 6:1 and 8:1 - meant to pull lotsa weight at slow highway speed and require a honkin big differential - what you want is an overdrive or the 5spd's some here like

The only compact-size 2-speeds I'm aware of were the Columbia models that were made for Ford passenger cars back in the 40's. The frame shape left no room for an overdrive trans, so they made a planetary-gear rear end to take the place of the overdrive. For OD ratios in a 3/4 or 1-ton, try to find a Clark 5-speed with OD on 5th gear. Passenger-car transmissions like the T-5 will be too lightweight to handle any truck duties except cruising around with no load in the bed.
