Well, i also had to replace the fuel pump on my 51 this weekend. it was sending more gas outta the side of the pump than was making it to the carb. Anyways put one on that was purchased from Napa for the 235 - they say it is the same. Well, put it on and she started right up with good fuel flow thru the clear filter. Started putting around town running errands, and then it started running rough at idle, but ok at higher rpms. by consulting my handy-dandy clear filter - you guessed it, no flow.
What gives? is it a bad pump that worked right at first and then doesn't? should i be using a different pump - are the 216 and 235 pumps the same? :confused:

You either have a bad pump or other problems.

Does fuel flow decently after the truck has been sitting for a while, then slow down? If so, it could be an unvented gas cap. Try driving either without the cap or with it loosened.

Otherwise, check the obvious.
Is there gas in the tank?
Is the tank valve open all the way?
If you disconnect the input line to the pump does gas flow freely out the line? If not, check the flow out of the tank, there might be either something in the line or plugging the strainer in the tank.

yeah, all the obvious stuff checks out. in fact, in the weeks leading up to the fuel pump taking a crap, i was driving the truck about every other day, and i was quite pleased with how well everything was running (obviously a sign of trouble.. )
We got a buncha snow the day after i put on the new pump, so i have not been able to investigate further. like i said, it was running fine at higher rpms, but not at idle, so i think it is the pump. if no one thinks that the 235 pump is different than a 216 pump, then i will return it and get a new one.....

They're the same pump. to check it right, you really need a pressure gauge. If your parts store will warranty that one just on your word, it's worth a try.
