I installed a GMC 270 with the SM420 into my 1948 Chevy 6100. After I installed the engine/clutch/xmsn; The clutch wouldn't engage/disengage the xmsn from the motor. I depressed the clutch pedal as far as its travel allowed and the motor still spun the xmsn with full torque. The type of clutch determines the correct length. That's true with the mid fifties and later, I don't know the details about exactly what fits the 48.

The center hub of the disc has several damper springs in it. The side of the disc where the damper springs stick out the furthest needs to go back inside the pressure plate. If the springs are installed toward the flywheel, they drag on the flywheel attaching bolts and don't let the clutch release fully.
